Just some tidbits of food and restaurant knowledge I picked up this week:
- A fundraiser was held for Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd at the Connecticut Science Center today. Vice President Joe Biden attended (but Dodd did not.) The menu? Veggie wraps, ham and brie sandwiches. The cost per plate? FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS.
- Got a sushi recommendation from Courant rock critic Eric Danton, who visited Sushi Palace in Hamden last night for their all-you-can-eat special. Yes, apparently for $17.95 on weeknights ($19.95 weekends) you can stuff yourself silly with sashimi, nigiri, special rolls, tempura and more. I have to point out that I asked twice for the restaurant’s ‘given name’ after he would only refer to it as “<Expletive> Yeah!”
- Restaurants I found on Twitter this week: Grilled Cheese to Go in Milford, Griff’s Chicken Shack in Hamden. Social media is DELICIOUS.
Area restaurant reviews:
Happy weekend, everyone. We’re sampling some new restaurants this weekend, so look for new posts early next week.

Travel Channel
Get hungry, Connecticut. Travel Channel’s ‘Man v. Food’ taped an episode at local eateries back in October and the episode airs next Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 10 p.m.
The episode’s description says that Adam enjoyed “humungous hot dogs and steamed cheeseburgers’ and took on a 10-pound stuffed pizza challenge at Randy’s Wooster St. Pizza Shop.

On the heels of restaurants dedicated to mac-and-cheese comes one that focuses on another classic and beloved comfort food, grilled cheese. Grilled Cheese To Go in Milford’s Connecticut Post Mall offers ‘good old-fashioned, delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and soups.’
The menu is simple: four choices of bread (Italian, rye, whole wheat, multigrain) five cheeses (American, cheddar, muenster, provolone, light swiss) and ‘toppings’ such as tomato, bacon, onion and basil. Tomato soup is always offered, and there’s also a soup of the day.
I say: Yummy, but maybe a few more choices. Sure, the classic buttery grilled cheese with standard American is the most familiar. But the foodie in me would kick it up with fresh mozzarella, brie, sourdough, ciabatta. Add ham and/or turkey, roasted peppers, portobello mushrooms, roasted garlic, marinara sauce (pizza grilled cheese?) Serve something that people wouldn’t necessarily make at home.
Either way, it’s a really fun restaurant concept and I’m sure it’s a popular food-court stop for shopping moms with kids in tow. And who couldn’t use a little comfort food these days?

Pop champagne...
Thirteen tables of champagnes and sparkling wines – and amazing little nibbles passed on trays. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than at the best cocktail party the area has to offer.
