I’ll be eating Worcester’s best sushi this weekend, as previously mentioned.

If you haven’t made up your foodie mind yet, here’s a roundup of this week’s local dining news and reviews…

macdaddysSaw news of this restaurant via a tweet this morning: MacDaddy’s Macaroni and Cheese Bar in Georgetown, Conn. is putting a seriously gourmet twist on the classic comfort food. Have I mentioned yet that baked macaroni and cheese makes me weak in the knees?

You can get your baked mac with anything from all-beef hot dogs, pulled pork, chicken, mushrooms and marsala wine; goat cheese, sun-dried tomato and shrimp. But if I had to choose just one, I think I’d have to try the Mac Lobo with fresh lobster, coconut red curry, zucchini and asiago cheese.

Mac lovers living closer to Hartford County might remember J.B. Mack’s Macaroni and Cheese restaurant in Manchester’s Buckland Hills Mall (a place I always meant to visit, until it closed down.) I just checked out their website and saw this message:

“THE BAD NEWS: The Buckland Hills Mall location is NOW CLOSED. We apologize for any inconvenience. THE GOOD NEWS:We are in the process of moving our Manchester store to a new location. Keep checking the web site for more news and information.”

A list of ‘future locations’ includes Storrs, Fairfield, New Haven, New York, Boston, West Palm Beach and Hollywood, Fla.

I remember seeing photos of J.B. Mack’s mac and cheese served up in a toasted bread bowl. Could there be a more perfect combination of carbohydrates?

In-n-Out Burger. is there anything better???

In-n-Out Burger. is there anything better???

Pretty sure Kevin Pang of the Chicago Tribune has the world’s coolest job, as he just spent six months chronicling burgers in Chicagoland. Here’s a gallery detailing his ’16 pearls of cheeseburger wisdom’.

I’m not a huge beef eater but I do love a good cheeseburger from time to time.  My area favorites are Plan B in West Hartford/Glastonbury, The Counter in West Hartford and we can’t forget White Hut in West Springfield with their sweet, sweet sauteed onions. Five Guys is coming to Enfield sometime soon and I hear nothing but delicious things.

Of course, I’d pretty much kill for an In-n-Out Burger outpost on the East Coast.

Your turn: I want to hear about your cheeseburger in paradise.

My birthplace of Worcester, Mass. is known for a few marginally cool things (hometown of Denis Leary, birthplace of the smiley face, a whole lot of colleges and universities) but up until recently, it wasn’t exactly a hotspot for great restaurants. That all changed about four or five years ago (just as I moved to Connecticut, naturally) when a spate of new, trendy eateries started to surface all over the city. With those came Baba Sushi, a tiny but jaw-droppingly good Japanese restaurant. Word quickly spread about town and now it’s damn near impossible to get a seat without a reservation. I met friends there for dinner about two years ago and apparently you even need to call for a seat at the bar. (We found that out the hard way when they booted us after our ‘hour’ was up.)

The food is just that good, though. So we were thrilled when my brother gave us a Baba gift card for our wedding (with the very quintessential Brendan inscription ‘congrats on getting hitched. now. eat sushi!’) We’ll be in ‘the Woo’ for my 10-year high school reunion this weekend, so expect pictures and reviews of Worcester’s best sushi early next week.

Mohegan Sun gets a double dose of Bobby Flay as the renowned chef and Food Network star opens his second restaurant, Bar Americain, at the casino Nov. 18. Flay announced the opening date on his Twitter account today.

Flay’s original Bar Americain restaurant in Manhattan is described on its website as an “American brasserie…with a healthy dose of the bold flavors Flay is known for.” The menu lists everything from lobster-avocado shellfish cocktail to green-chile spoonbread. A special Thanksgiving menu offers pumpkin soup, maple horseradish-glazed turkey and cedar-plank salmon with crawfish sauce.

Flay opened his first Mohegan Sun restaurant, Bobby’s Burger Palace, in early July 2009. BBP serves gourmet burgers topped with everything from bacon and bleu cheese to avocado relish, Meyer lemon honey mustard and potato chips (‘Crunchified’ is the term Flay uses.) For those with a sweet tooth, Bobby’s Burger Palace serves an array of milkshakes and malteds, and those over 21 can spike them with rum, bourbon or vodka.

Flay’s spent plenty of time in Connecticut these past few months, it seems. In September, he surprised the owners of Jones Family Farm in Shelton by challenging them to a cooking competition for his popular Food Network show, “Throwdown With Bobby Flay’” according to the Valley Independent Sentinel. The episode will air on Nov. 11 at 9 p.m.
